Christmas Windows

Here are some pictures of the windows at Bergdorf Goodman. This is only from the women's store, I have pictures of the men's store as well but they are totally different and deserve a post of their own :) The displays were inspired by Lewis Carroll's books and you definitely get the Alice in Wonderland vibe, although the polar bears below remind me a little more of C.S. Lewis and the Queen of Narnia. The crazy part is that the displays take a whole year to produce!I love the polar bears but the picture didn't really do them justice. They are made from fringe and their faces are buttons and sequins, really beautiful! This one is pretty awesome as well with the greenery horses. There were several others but I liked these the best. It was freezing cold and really windy the night I took the pictures so several of them weren't the greatest pictures. It was way too cold to worry about picture quality though!

Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, I know I did! My mom and sisters came up for Christmas and it has been so great to have family here for the holidays. Its even been surprisingly painless having five people in the apartment.

I wanted to share my Christmas decorations with everyone, even though I put my tree up a couple of weeks before Christmas I didn't really put the finishing touches on my decorating until the very last minute, so here it is, better late than never :)I was trying to do kind of a modern Christmas so I chose a less traditional green as my accent color (I was looking for lime green but it turned out to be hard to find) and then I just did mainly silver and white for the rest. I found this really awesome crocodile silver foil wrapping paper at TJ Maxx. The tree ended up being pretty monochromatic which I've never done before but I think it turned out nicely. John mentioned something about there not being any color though so maybe next year I'll have to change it up a little. I didn't bring any Christmas decorations to New York when we moved so in an effort not to spend a fortune I made these cute snowflakes from pipe cleaners. I found the instructions on Martha Stewart's website. I think they turned out great and they were so easy and cheap.
I made this wreath from wire coat hangers and left over branches, its kind of more of an oval than a circle but I was bending the coat hangers myself and I think I did a pretty decent job. The tree vendor was really nice and threw in a big pile of branches from other people's trees since he didn't cut much off of our tree. I had more branches than I knew what to do with, I could have made at least two more wreaths! Just in case you didn't know, everyone in New York gets a real tree because there's no where to store a fake tree the rest of the year. My poor husband had to lug our really decent sized tree several blocks back to our apartment.

PS - I'm up at 2 in the morning blogging because its wintertime in New York which means our apartment is sweltering so we have the windows open and apparently a building very close to ours is on fire because I can smell the smoke and hear every single thing (sirens, breaking glass, chainsaw, etc)!

Winter Is Here

...well technically not until tomorrow, but 11 inches of snow sure says winter to me! It started snowing Saturday and by Sunday there was almost a foot of snow. I'm so glad it was over the weekend and not while I was trying to walk to work because it was freezing. Saturday night John and I took Rosie on a walk and went out to dinner and it was soooo cold! Poor Rosie's paws got so cold and icy she wanted me to carry her (she normally hates being carried). It was really snowing hard when we were out walking around and the wind made it pretty unbearable.Sunday was much nicer to go out and see the snow because there wasn't much wind and it had pretty much stopped snowing. We went to Madison Square Park and let Rosie run around and then we got Shake Shack for lunch. Shake Shack, for those of you unfamiliar, has a really awesome burger and its pretty cheap. Unfortunately those qualities make it highly desirable and there is ALWAYS a line. They even have a live web cam just so you can see how long the line is. John and I like to go when its really cold outside because then there's only a small line :)

What was I Thinking

I've been putting off all the things on my to-do list all week. I really didn't want to be running around NY every night after work so I came up with the great idea to do it all in one trip.

I meticulously planned my route so that there would be no backtracking and I could get everything done efficiently. What I forgot to account for is that I would be carrying everything I bought with me on that meticulous journey. It was about the third store in that I realized this was a bad idea and by the time I made it to my last store I thought my arms were going to fall off. I was starting to get bad looks and one guy even made some sarcastic remarks while we crossed the street. I took a picture when I got home just so I could share with you guys.Even better is that it was super cold and windy outside but I was drenched in sweat! These are the days I'm not so sure I really like living in NY.

Christmas at Bloomingdale's

I went to my Bible study Christmas party tonight and Bloomingdale's is close by so I stopped to take pictures of their Christmas displays. This first one is a series of two windows and I think its awesome! Dynamic duos night to meet Santa and you've got Batman and Robin and Barack and Michelle Obama.
I don't really know what this window is about but there are a ton of shoes and everything is covered in glitter. The gigantic shoe is actually a conveyor belt and the shoes move along it. I think the tree made entirely out of shoes is pretty great. This one is gummy bears, I think, all I know is the bears are adorable!
So at least I've gotten pictures from one of the big stores now. I did manage to get my Christmas tree this past weekend and get it decorated but I'm not ready to share pictures just yet :)

Its NOT beginning to look a lot like Christmas

....at least not at my house

Everybody's blog posts the past couple of weeks were titled "its beginning to look a lot like Christmas" and they were cute pictures of their trees and their houses all decorated. As for me, I just can't seem to get in the mood for Christmas. I was hoping to do several blog posts of all the fun Christmas stuff around the city but this is the best I can do right now.

Last weekend I went to run an errand and happened to walk by Macy's. This picture is one of their Christmas display windows. They had several but it was raining and snowing at the same time and it was unbelievably crowded, so I just took this one. This is the Christmas tree in Madison Square Park which is where Rosie and I walk most evenings. Sorry for the poor quality, I took it with my phone.
Maybe next week I'll be in a more Christmas-y mood and do a better job showing you guys the city all dolled up for Christmas.

Happy Thanksgiving

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, I know I did. It was a little weird not going home for the holidays, but it was fun for John and I to actually cook our first Thanksgiving meal together. In our five years of marriage we've always celebrated with our families and so we've never hosted or had to cook, I felt very grown up hosting our own Thanksgiving dinner. We had our friends Susy and Ryan over since they weren't going back to Arkansas either. Here's a picture of our brand new table and chairs all set up for dinner. Before John and I started our marathon of cooking and cleaning we took a short walk over to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Since we aren't morning people at all, I set an alarm for 10:30 so we could get up and make it over to the parade before it was over at noon (if I hadn't set an alarm we would have slept until noon). We caught the last 30 minutes or so of the parade. The route changed this year and so instead of marching straight down Broadway they had to make several turns. We went to Herald Square and watched as the parade made their last turn to head to Macy's. We didn't really get close enough to see the marching bands but we could definitely see all of the balloons. These were the Christmas elves that came right before the huge Santa float that ends the parade every year. I think John could have cared less about seeing the parade but I sure thought it was fun :)

Most Productive/Expensive Weekend Ever

John and I have spent all weekend furniture shopping. Man is new furniture expensive! Our new apartment is a little bigger and so we wanted to get a couple of new pieces like a bigger dining table and a daybed for guests. We decided that now was the time to go modern if we were ever going to do it; the apartment has a pretty modern kitchen and bathroom and John has always wanted to have a modern apartment.

So after lots of looking online we made a couple of trips to actual stores yesterday and today and came home with some furniture. Here is the new dining table which is a much needed improvement over the tiny table we had that only sat the two of us, especially since we're having people over for the holidays. We didn't get the bench, just the table. We got the chairs below instead. Here's the daybed we got which we really liked because it doesn't really look like a daybed and it unfolds into a queen size mattress. Now when my family comes for almost two full weeks at Christmas we'll actually have enough room for them all to sleep comfortably.
Now hopefully we're set for a very long time!

The Daily Show

John and I went to see a live taping of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart Tuesday night. It was so much fun!It took forever to get in and then get started, but it was worth it. The warm-up comedian was hilarious and then Jon Stewart was great. Before he started the show he took audience questions and joked around with us. Serena Williams was the guest for the evening which was pretty cool, she's so muscular! This was definitely a cool experience :)

Fall in the City

Our new apartment is really close to Madison Square Park so I've been taking Rosie there most days for her walk. I don't know if its really a good idea though because Rosie is at her worst in the park, she see's squirrels and just goes insane. She likes to lunge at pigeons but squirrels she full out tries to chase, she even starts to howl like the hunting dog she was meant to be. I try to get her to stop but there's pretty much no hope; I just laugh and hope people don't think we're crazy :)On a completely different note...aren't these the cutest pumpkins you've ever seen! John and I were walking around our new neighborhood and I had to stop and take a picture.

Happy Halloween Ya'll

John and I went to his company's Halloween party Thursday night. Man do they know how to throw a party! It was over the top and people's costumes were insane. Being my first Halloween in NYC I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I definitely underestimated the level of commitment. John and I went as Arkansans. For me that meant a camo jacket, cowboy boots and a cut off jean skirt. John went as the guy that dances during the third quarter at all of the Razorback games, I think his name is Hillbilly Hog or something. So John wore a mullet wig, John Deere hat, flannel shirt, jean shorts, and the big hit of the evening, he went barefoot. I thought we looked pretty cute and we thought it was funny since we're from Arkansas. After the party though John and I both agreed we would have to step it up next year.
Just trying to remember some of the more impressive costumes:
Grover as a police officer
All four Teletubbies
The kid from UP in full boy scout uniform, balloons and all
Edward Scissorhands (one of John's friends)
Guys in tuxedos with really fancy masks
LOTS of guys in drag or some kind of skin tight leather

So on to the actual party...
First of all you couldn't get in if you didn't have a costume on. Once you were allowed in the door, the place was decorated from top to bottom including the hallways. There were three bars, all of which were open bar. There was a runway to show off your costume/dance/have performances. There were professional dancers (I don't know if I should really call them dancers because they also did some acrobatics in swings hung from the ceiling). There was even a dancer who did a routine with fire. Like I said, over the top. I was in awe.

Family

John's family came to visit not this past weekend, but the weekend before that. They came for a quick weekend trip to celebrate his dad's birthday. We had lots of fun and tried to pack in as much stuff as we could. We took them to our favorite bakery and our favorite brunch place; we went to Times Square, saw Wicked, and ate at a great steak place.
We did manage to go to a couple of places that were new to John and I. John's sister wanted to go to the American Girl store which we had not visited before, its pretty insane by the way. John's step-brother, Taylor, wanted to go to the Nike flagship store which was another new one for us, also really impressive. We also did some of the standards like go stand on the red steps in Times Square and visit the M & M store.Unfortunately it was pretty chilly all weekend, especially for John's family who is used to Orlando weather. Its much more enjoyable for us to go visit them and take a break from the cold (we're saving that trip for when its really awful up here, like in January).

Keep Your Fingers Crossed

John and I put in an application on an apartment last week. Its actually a studio, but is bigger than the apartment we have now and has an awesome kitchen (by awesome I mean HUGE and fantastically renovated). For those of you who aren't familiar with NYC apartments, kitchens here are often the size of closets. My sister thought it was hilarious that she could stretch out her arms and touch both the walls in the kitchen we have now.

Here's a picture of the kitchen in the apartment we're hoping to get. There's a full size stainless steel refrigerator on the other side!So now for the not so great part, the apartment is in a co-op building which means we have to be approved by the board to rent there. This has been worse than applying for a mortgage for our old house; we had to give them tax statements, bank statements, and letters of employment to start. After proving we could afford the apartment with all of that we had to provide two personal reference letters, two business reference letters, a letter from our landlord and a letter attesting to the behavior of our dog!

This whole process has been nuts and the worst part is that the board can take up to 30 days to decide. Here's where we need everyone to cross their fingers, our lease for our apartment now is up November 1st. We need the board to decide in two weeks, not 30 days! If the board doesn't decide by the 1st John and I will have to find a temporary residence for another week or two and that's assuming that we will be approved.

*****UPDATE****
We got the apartment and we were able to move in this weekend!!! I'm taking a break from unpacking as we speak :)

Its Official, I'm a New Yorker

Well technically. I got my NY state driver's license the other day. I'm not really planning on ever driving in NYC but my Arkansas license had expired. I originally thought about just not renewing it because it would be a hassle and I'm not driving, but apparently having an ID is kind of important.

Just a few of the reasons I forgot you need a non-expired license:
Boarding a plane
Getting into a bar
Getting into high security buildings, like the Empire State Building
Filling out paper work for a job :)

I spent a long time at the DMV, but I guess it was worth it. I'm happy with the picture which is good because I'm definitely not doing that again any time soon. I had thought about trying to put up a picture but decided that probably wouldn't be wise in the era of identity theft, you guys will just have to use your imagination :)

Working Girl

I got my first pay check on Friday; it had been a long, long time since I had seen one of those!

So far the job is going really well, the hardest part is getting dressed every morning. The dress code in the office is a little dressier than I'm used to and not being able to wear jeans is really hard. At my job back in Arkansas I could wear jeans and so I really only had to dress nicely a couple of days a week, here I have to look nice every day!

I've had to seriously re-evaluate my work wardrobe and definitely had to do a little supplementing. Several of the things I used to wear back home don't really work here in NY since I walk a little more. I learned really quickly to walk to work in tennis shoes and then change into my dress shoes. Unfortunately I discovered that doesn't work on rainy days as my socks and shoes were soaked all the way through by the time I got to work. The next day I wore rain boots and it ended up not raining at all. I felt a little silly, but oh well.

I'm hoping since I'll be starting my third week at work I'll be able to get dressed with a little less struggle. I'd really like to not try on 15 different things just to come up with an outfit. I guess the good thing is that I've been doing that for two weeks and I can fall back on some of those outfits. I am definitely starting to feel more like a New Yorker though, so that's kinda cool.

Catching Up

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind!

First of all after eight LONG months, I finally got a job! I'm working at a furniture distribution company as an administrative floater. It definitely has the potential to turn into something a little more design related down the road and the awesome part is that its where my two friends that I've met up here that are originally from AR work. Last week was my first week and so far everyone there is so nice. It also really helps that I already know two people. Its going to take me a little while to get back into the swing of having a set schedule though. I had gotten pretty used to sleeping until whenever I wanted to. I was so tired all of last week but this week so far promises to be better, I actually woke up before my alarm this morning.

John's birthday was also the first part of October. For his birthday we went to see Oleanna, a play by David Mamet. It was another one of those really intense, kind of controversial ones, but it was definitely interesting. Julia Stiles and Bill Pullman were the stars and there was even a moderated discussion afterward. Before the play we spent the day shopping which I know, doesn't sound like something John would want to do on his birthday. The funny thing is that I said I needed to go shopping for a couple of new things for work and John chimed in that he wanted to go too. In the entire length of our five year marriage John has NEVER volunteered to go shopping!

Its so funny to see how living in NY changes you. John has actually taken an interest in fashion! I think a lot of that has to do with working for Gilt and having access to really nice designer clothing. The day of his birthday we went shopping on 5th avenue for most of the day. We both got a couple of things. I was exhausted by the time we finished and John was the one that was excited and wanted to go home and change into his new clothes. He got a new pair of shoes and a blazer that he couldn't wait to wear so he changed and wore that to the play.

The other thing that has been taking up a lot of our time lately is apartment hunting. We've spent the past couple of weekends looking at apartments and I've even gone out a couple of times after work to look. You would think apartment hunting in NY would be really fun, but its not, its so exhausting! You don't realize how much you've walked going from building to building until you get home and finally sit down after hours and hours of being on your feet. Its really draining both physically and emotionally. The most frustrating part is that John and I will be really excited about seeing an apartment and then when we get there its tiny and doesn't look anything like the pictures. Its so frustrating!

Sorry for the two week absence and the super long post, I think we're all caught up now :)

Well...

I just saw Fame and I was a little disappointed. I LOVE dance movies, tv shows, whatever but this really didn't live up to my high hopes. It seemed like there were just little bits and pieces of dance numbers and the only one that was really awesome was the movie ending. I think they were trying to cram too much stuff into the movie and so you ended up only skimming the surface of the characters and their talent. Oh well.

The more interesting part of the movie was the audience. If I had seen Fame back home in Arkansas I would have been surrounded by lots of teenage girls but since I saw it in my Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan I was surrounded by a theater full of gay men (I'm assuming the gay part based on their general sense of style and the fact that my husband had to be drug kicking and screaming to see this movie).

Best Weekend Ever! (part 2)

Sunday
John and I have leisurely been looking at apartments since our lease is up in November and we've decided not to stay in the apartment we're in. Its not that we don't love our apartment, its that we hate the stairs that we have to climb to get to our apartment.

We've been looking at lots of different neighborhoods and don't really care as long as we can find all the things we want in an apartment. Sunday morning we went to check out an apartment in Willimsburg in Brooklyn. I don't know how much I love Williamsburg, but I definitely love the apartments there. The one we went to look at was brand new and beautiful. It had a great kitchen with stainless steel appliances and really modern cabinets. We looked at a two bedroom apartment which was awesome in terms of space. It even had a washer and dryer in the apartment which is pretty much unheard of in Manhattan.

Realistically we shouldn't be looking at apartments yet because all the ones we've seen have move in dates either in September or the first part of October; our lease isn't up until the first part of November, but its just so fun to look we haven't been able to help ourselves.

After grabbing lunch and walking around Williamsburg for what seemed like forever we went back to Manhattan and saw the movie 9. It was a little dark for a children's movie, but it was ok. I think John enjoyed it more, I thought it was kinda weird.

Since we were around Union Square we decided to try this dumpling place that we had heard people talking about. Apparently they have some crazy recession special and an order of dumplings is like $2! I love dumplings and was really excited. We ordered three different kinds of dumplings some fried and some boiled. The fried ones were definitely the best. We tried a couple of other things on their menu and our dinner came out to $13, by far the cheapest dinner we've had in a long time. I would go back to Vanessa's Dumplings anytime!

Sunday couldn't really compare to Saturday in terms of excitement, but this was the best weekend ever because John and I got to spend sooo much time together. Most weekends John has to do some work and we never have this much going on. I had so much fun hanging out with my husband and enjoying all that NY has to offer!

Best Weekend Ever! (part 1)

This weekend was packed full of fun, so much fun I'm breaking it up into two parts, Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday
John and I went to a damage sale that his company was hosting Saturday morning. It was at their warehouse where they had all of their "damaged" products and they allowed employees and a guest come and purchase stuff for really cheap. I put damaged in quotation marks because out of the things I purchased the only thing I noticed that was damaged were the tags. Some of the things I tried on were missing buttons but for the most part the merchandise didn't look damaged.
(Sweater I'm super excited about; purchased for $25, original price $436)

The sale was crazy, like the stuff you see in movies where people are running and pushing and hoarding things. I think everyone in there broke into a sweat. John and I split up and grabbed as much as we could and then went to a corner to sort through things. There were no dressing rooms, but I wore a dress so that I could slip pants on under my dress to try on. There were lots of other girls who wore leggings and tank tops so they could try on everything. It was definitely a learning experience, next time John and I will know what to expect.
(Cashmere dress that I think is ADORABLE but have no idea what to wear with; paid $25, originally $328)

John ended up only getting a pair of shoes and a shirt, but I found lots of things of course. The best part was that nothing was more than $25! Since I'm pretty much fashion illiterate, I'm not familiar with the brands and I really don't know how I'm going to wear some of the things I bought because they are pretty trendy. I'm trying to spread my fashion wings and attempt to dress more like I live in New York instead of Arkansas.

Immediately after the damage sale John and I grabbed lunch and headed to Times Square to see A Steady Rain. We were both really excited about this play because it's brand new and has Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. The play was awesome! We splurged and paid for orchestra seats on the floor instead of in the balcony so we were like 30 feet away from Hugh and Daniel. The play was pretty intense and was most impressive because it was just the two of them sitting on the stage telling a story. There were no other actors, no props besides their two chairs, and most of the time it was just a plain black background. 90 minutes of dialogue between Hugh and Daniel, very impressive.

The rest of the day was not as exciting. We went home, I napped, and then we fixed dinner; excellent day overall :)

Labor Day

Yesterday I went to Norwalk, Connecticut to meet a couple of my old friends from college and hang out at the beach. This was my first time taking the actual train and leaving the NY area. I forget how close a lot of things are and how easy they are to reach with public transportation.

It only took about an hour from Grand Central and since my friends drove from their home in Connecticut, they picked me up at the train station. The beach was only 10 minutes from there and it was just what I had imagined a New England beach to look like.

There were sailboats everywhere and a couple of islands and even a light house off in the distance. It was even a little chilly which fit right in with my notion of New England. I guess up here the fall really sets in quickly because one day it was warm and then all of a sudden its not warm anymore. It was way too cold for me to go swimming, but there were definitely the brave few who did. Mostly we just munched on snacks and caught up all day.

It was a really great day and it was so fun to see my friends who I hadn't seen in several years. The only down side was that since it was chilly and breezy I didn't really think to put on sunscreen until I had already gotten a bit too much sun. Unfortunately I will be paying for that little mistake for awhile.

Go Jets!

I've never been a big NFL fan, really unless its an SEC team I'm not interested, but John and I went to a Jets game last night. John is working on an app for the Iphone and so this outing was supposedly for research purposes; I was just excited to be enjoying all that NY has to offer.

The weather was awesome, the seats weren't bad, Jeremy Piven was there, and people booed Michael Vick every time he stepped on the field. I thought it was great!

The game was the last preseason game for the Jets and I'm assuming because it was still preseason that's why there was no half time show. Instead they had 8 and 9 year old football teams come out and run some plays on the field. It was adorable and the 8 year olds looked so tiny on such a big field. If I didn't know they were 8 I would have guessed more like 5, so cute!

Happy Birthday Rosie!

My sweet little baby is 5! Rosie's birthday was this weekend and I can't believe how old she is. I think I'm actually in more shock that she's five than I was on our fifth wedding anniversary. I guess that's a little weird but it seems like not to long ago she was so tiny and the cutest puppy ever.

Rosie wouldn't get near her dog treat until I blew out the candle. John tried to make her sit near it for a picture but she was just so pitiful looking. For her birthday we took a long walk and went to Madison Square Park and let her chase pigeons and squirrels. After the park we went to a fancy dog store and got her birthday treats. The box even came with a candle to go in the bone, how cute!

Rosie also got a new bed for her birthday. I found it for pretty cheap considering how expensive dog beds are and she seems to like it. I think for a dog she had a pretty great birthday but now she's laying by the door wanting a walk so off we go.

Shoe Rampage

For my birthday I decided to do a little shoe shopping; it turned out to be more than a little. In one day I bought three pairs of shoes each for $20, how awesome was that! I definitely would not have bought three pairs if they hadn't been so cheap, I'm a big fan of bargain hunting and sales most of the time.

I was on a mission to find a pair of sandals to wear for our fancy dinner at Le Cirque that evening. I was looking for something that I could walk around in and that would go with a gray dress. I found these two at Steve Madden and since they were on sale I got both.

I wore the white ones that night with my dress in case you were wondering :)

I wandered into another store on my way back to the apartment. This store had a basement where everything was $20, you just had to do a little digging. I found a pair of boots that I couldn't pass up. I wasn't familiar with the brand so I looked it up when I got home. Apparently these are some decent boots because elsewhere they are around $100! Originally I had wanted a pair of Birkenstocks for my birthday but I never could find a pair that I was really happy with. I looked at a pair very similar to the ones below several times but never ended up getting them because the t-strap was backed in felt instead of being leather. I knew that there was a leather version but I never could find it in stores and it was much pricier online. I just happened to check one more store this week and they actually had the leather version for the same price as the felt ones so of course I had to get them.
I think I'm pretty well outfitted with shoes for a while or at least I better be because John will kill me if I bring anymore shoes home!

Oh, I almost forgot....my mom gave me a pair of shoes for my birthday too! I picked these out when I was in Arkansas. Ok, definitely done now :)

This one's for you Irene

My friend Irene has asked several times to see pictures of the apartment and I've never gotten any for her. Since we're having our first non-family guest this week and I've been cleaning the apartment like never before I figured now would probably be the cleanest the apartment ever is and so it would be a great time to finally take pictures. Here you go :)

Living room/John's office

Kitchen

The kitchen actually has a dishwasher and a decent amount of counter space and cabinetry which is pretty hard to find in NY. This wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't come from my newly remodeled gigantic kitchen in Arkansas.

Bedroom

The bedroom is about 7 feet wide so with the bed you have about a foot and a half pathway to walk over to the other side of the room. I recently had to move my jewelry to the dresser with the lamp because in the rush to get ready I kept bumping into the corner of the bed trying to get to the other dresser. My blue and green shins weren't looking so hot.

Bathroom

Realistically, this apartment was a huge blessing. We came for a weekend to find an apartment and we really didn't know anything about apartments in NY. We were able to find this one and even though it has its down side (like the four flights of stairs) its really quiet, gets great sunlight, and isn't insanely tiny. We definitely could have done worse.
